Featuring:

Bioengineering of Agriculture Using a synthesis of diagrammatic and artistic imagery, this artist and bioengineer duo will attempt to cover some of the current practices of industrial farming, covering major topics such as genetic engineering, agrochemical use, social and environmental impact, and finally an alternative method of farming using modern organic practices.

Juanita Matthews, PhD, 2010.  Molecular Biosciences and Bioengineering, University of Hawaii.  Dr. Matthews is a research scientist with a background in genetic engineering. She is co-founder of Sustainable Saunders and co-founder and director of programs and research for MUSE - Make us a Sustainable Earth, a nonprofit organization that strives to create a more sustainable earth by empowering the public through educational programs which integrate the arts and sciences.

Sheri Lyles, MFA Candidate, University of Hawaii at Manoa. Sheri's education and career in the healthcare sciences as an ARDMS registered cardiovascular technologist influences her work as an artist as her initial interests in human health have directed her toward food and the natural environment as one of the basic necessities for disease prevention.  Along with some images of her artwork, she will share some of her research and experiences in organic farming in India.

Q: How Does Lava Flow? This artist & geologist duo will be exploring the physics of “flow.”  Mary Elise will present on the physics of lava flow on earth in comparison to the moon.  Gideon Gerlt will be exploring the creative flow between creator, viewer and art.

Mary Elise, PHD Geology.  Elise explores the physics of lava. Two billion years ago lava actively flowed on the surface of the moon. Much like the Earth, the moon once had a heated core and a moving surface. She is trying to figure out how the lava interacted with the lunar soil.

Gideon Gerlt, MFA sculpture candidate.  Gerlt is interested in the scientific exploration of abstract figuration. What is it that happens between the creator, the viewer and the art work? How does this question become important in a relational art context?

Archeology This archeologist/art duo will discuss how the insights of career field work in archeology informs and overlaps with a contemporary art dialog.

Moana Lee.  Contract archeologist who assesses the impact of development projects within the Hawaiian islands, and on the Hawaiian culture.

Michael Hengler.  An artist investigating and exploring cultural, economic, ecological, and sociological borders, and their intersections.

Thanks to everyone who came out for an exciting evening!!!
